Yerba Santa is an evergreen shrub native to the California and New Mexico regions of the United States of America. Its stems are covered with a sticky resin. The shrub’s leaves are tough and leathery and measure about 3 to 4 inches long. Its flowers are white to lavender (even purple) and are shaped in the form of little trumpets. The plant as whole is about 3 to 4 feet tall.
Yerba Santa has traditionally been used to treat asthma, common colds, cough, fever, swelling of the airways in the lungs (commonly called bronchitis). Other conditions the herb is used for loosening mucus, spasms, and tuberculosis.
Historically, the American Indians rolled and smoked the dried leaves to treat asthma. The herb is often used in blends to treat asthmatic conditions as described earlier. I know what you’re thinking. Maybe you can roll that brand of herbs to make a different kind of joint to smoke for a different kind of thrill ride. You can’t stick to its health benefits and save yourself a puff of empty embarrassment.
The natural chemicals residing in this herb, purposely loosens the mucus in the chest area, so the next time, you are experiencing a cough or cold that will not go away, try drinking this tea slowly to bring you back to a congestion free you.
